About the Florentine Marriage Certificate
The border of this parchment document is of Italian origin and features a most elaborate interwoven ‘white vine’ design. Its intricacy & delicacy are a fine tribute to Florentine workmanship, it dates back to mid 15th century and the document that it belonged to was given as a wedding gift to one of the greatest medieval kings that ever lived, Mathias of Hungary. The initials M, and C at the top of the parchment are of Victorian origin as is the cherub sitting with a ring on each leg and 3 doves & the whole piece is in the hand of a 16th century Italian writing master. The gold leaf is applied by hand over a terracotta ground of raised gesso as in medieval times.
