Our Secret Process
Each Marriage Certificate is hand-crafted in our Los Angeles workshop by Jeff Cane, creator of the secret formula that makes our Certificates the most authentic you can buy today, and ‘Curator’ of ‘An Englishman in LA – the most unusual company this side of the 15th Century’.
Jeff has been producing authentic ancient ‘forgeries’ for over a decade, perfecting his resin and parchment formulas, and producing amazingly realistic facsimiles of genuine 15th century documents and relics. Several items of his work are currently being featured at the Los Angeles County Museum’s Pompeii Exhibition, and his client list reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of top celebrities – Oprah Winfrey, Pamela Anderson, Freddy Prinze Jr & Sarah Michelle Gellar – to name but a handful.
Jeff is an ex-pat Englishman in LA – coincidentally the name of his website where you can see the range of artifacts he produces in addition to our range of marriage certificates.
Jeff started his Romantic Parchment route as far back as 1992 – in fact not long after he headed West to Los Angeles. He created his first Parchment Poetry piece (an ornate romantic poetry document created especially as a personalised gift).
It wasnt long before celebrities were after the Englishman’s wares – Romance and Chivalry were alive and living in LA! Leeza Gibbons was amongst the first to utilise Cane’s talent for recreating the past and he made several guest gifts for the celebrities visiting Leeza’s talk show, including for Roseanne’s wedding vows, and for the Birth announcements for both of Pamela Anderson’s children.
As with all creative people, their minds are never standing still and Cane was no different – the parchment poetry led to more celebratory pieces and the parchment marriage certificate was born. Today his impressive list of celebratory artifacts include a Ketubah (both personalised and non-personalised) that utilises artwork that bordered an illuminated Hebrew manuscript of the words of the prophet Amos (700 BCE), Birth Announcements, Christening, Bat / Bar Mitzvah parchments, Graduation and Quincinera documents and the tour-de-force, the Marriage Certificate both on parchment and on TILE – truly astonishing artifacts!
Cane uses ancient and modern techniques (that he wont divulge) to create his stunning pieces and if the parchments are applied to wood or tile artifacts, he makes them from scratch as well!
Cane’s romantic path to the past has garnered him many famous clients, film companies and top notch establishments that are willing to showcase his unique work and talent. He created a stunning framed parchment for the wedding of Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinz Jr and has been the subject of many print and magazine articles, notably two major features in the LA Times, one in the newspaper and the other its’ weekend magazine.
Jeff Cane has a unique knack for aging, a sort of reverse Dorian Gray – everything he touches looks hundreds of years old, just like it came straight from a museum. When asked how he forges so well, and where he was shown how to do such authentic replicas, he shrugs his shoulders and gives a knowing look…
“It just comes to me – I have no idea how and no one has ever taught me – it’s instinctive and natural for me. In fact, the spooky thing is, after I created my parchment look I went back to London and the British Museum to see how close I had come to the look of the many Illuminated parchment documents they had there. It was astonishing – as if I had taken the originals themselves from the cases!” comes his reply.
