The border of this parchment document is of Italian origin and features a most elaborate interwoven ‘white vine’ design. Its’ intricacy & delicacy are a fine tribute to Florentine workmanship, it dates back to mid 15th century and the document that it belonged to was given as a wedding gift to one of the greatest medieval kings that ever lived, Mathias of Hungary. The initials M, and C at the top of the parchment are of Victorian origin & the whole piece is in the hand of a 16th century Italian writing master. The touching hands of course are taken from Renaissance master Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel masterpiece, God creating the first man. The borders of this hand-made parchment have been taken from an extremely old and very rare illuminated manuscript which dates back to the 14th century. If you look closely you will see that each border is made up of 18 hearts, and that was all the reason needed, to include them in this creation that celebrates the love of two people. The coat of arms dates back to around 1550 and belonged to a European King. It is used because the strength of the lions represents the strength of the marriage, and four gold hearts in the centre celebrate your love and tie the whole document together. The gold leaf is applied by hand over a terra-cotta ground of raised gesso, as was the method in medieval times.
